McMillan Group designed the Rock and Roll Annex exhibition in New York City. This is a view of the entrance using photographer Bob Gruen's famous photo of John Lennon mounted to the city building facing south and an early image from the Ed Sullivan Show facing north. A painted VW van was used as the ticket booth.
McMillan Group curated the subject matter to organize musicians by topic instead of chronologically. We were responsible for designing all interior space and the exhibits. This area included Guitar Heros. We used objects from the musician and displayed them in relevant context, bringing the experience to life for the visitors.
This is McMillan Group's concept, including lighting and special FX, for an interactive performance space where visitors saw themselves on stage and were instantly edited into video and playing music with well known artists via green screen technology.
This view shows what the visitor sees on the green screen stage. We designed the concept, stage, as well as specifying the sound and lighting effects for this visitor interactive that allows them to be part of a famous band of their choice.
A changing gallery space was designed to feature various artists and their connection to New York. Depicted here is the first example featuring the Clash.
The museum experience started here where each guest got a back stage pass
to a concert where the greatest Rock musicians were brought to life - all in one place, at one moment in time, and where the guests became part of the Rock and Roll story.
This gallery featured an interactive exploration of historic Rock and Roll venues on a 3D New York City model showing where different genres of music were born. The outer walls of the room featured key objects such as the awning from CBGB’s, and Bruce Springsteen’s 1957 Chevy, among other objects.
The Rock and Roll Annex was a satellite museum exhibition for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH. Located on Mercer Street in Greenwich Village, New York, NY, the space replicated a 60’s era Rock Club. Our main goal with this exhibition was to create an visitor experience that was as gritty and real as the best expression of the music itself. McMillan Group was responsible for: exhibit curation, museum design and interactive design.
